Prepping for the Micro-Tunnel
It is a very exciting time for the BDPL5 Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project right now! The Contractor is getting the Right of Way ready for micro-tunneling to begin September 20, 2012.
On the Receiving Pit Side (near Woodhue Court and Edgewood Road ), the Contractor drilled relief holes through the harder rock of the tunnel shaft. This will allow for easier excavation of the receiving pit when they reach the bedrock. Crews will start digging the tunnel shaft with an excavator on Wednesday of this week. All work will be on the Right of Way and should have minimal impact to traffic on Edgewood Road.

The tunnel subcontractor on the Jacking Pit Side (on the Bennett Road median) began mobilizing to the site in preparation to begin micro-tunneling. Another large crane was brought on site to lower the MTBM (micro tunnel boring machine) and other materials into the 40ft deep shaft.
The guide rails were lowered into the shaft last week. This guide rail system will keep the MTBM on line and will guide the 60” water pipeline into 72” bored tunnel. It is estimated that the Contractor will launch the tunnel head this week and begin the micro-tunnel on September 20, 2012. (More on the anatomy of a MTBM later this week- stay tuned!)
We appreciate the community's cooperation with the delivery of the equipment and materials!
**Please remember to follow all traffic controls and flaggers when driving on Cordilleras Road or Bennett Road. Truck deliveries are expected to continue this week as the Contractor sets up the work area.

Final striping of the Bay Road restoration was completed last week. The Project is working directly with the local jurisdictions to ensure restoration is to pre-existing conditions.
Wood Fences along the entire alignment are complete!!
Success! Edgewood Rd Crossing Complete
We appreciate all of the neighbors, drivers and pedestrians for their patience with the road closure and detour Labor Day weekend! With your support, the Contractor installed the new drinking water pipeline across Edgewood Road.
Check out some of the photos from the trenches.

Project Updates:
Receiving Pit Side (Near Woodhue Court and Edgewood Road)
- All 24 secant piles have been installed forming the walls of the receiving pit.
- The Contractor is drilling relief holes through the harder rock so they can begin excavation of the receiving pit next week on September 12, 2012.
Jacking Pit Side (on the Bennett Road median)
- Crews who were excavating reached the bottom of approximately 40ft deep jacking pit. They poured concrete slab bottom to make the tunnel shaft completely water proof.
- This week the tunnel subcontractor began mobilizing to the site. They are preparing to begin micro-tunneling on September 20, 2012.
