THIS Weekend - Edgewood Road Closure; Traffic Detour to Cordilleras Road

View Edgewood Road Closure over Labor Day Weekend in a larger map

Over Labor Day Weekend (8/31 to 9/4), work is scheduled to begin on the installation of a new five-foot diameter drinking water pipeline across Edgewood Road in San Mateo County.

The new pipeline will be installed using an open trench process which involves excavating the trench, laying and welding segments of the pipe, then backfilling the trench. This work will require the full closure of Edgewood Road from Cervantes Road to Cordilleras Road as crews work in the street. Traffic controls will be in place.

The closure of Edgewood Road will begin August 31st at 10:00 p.m. and last until September 4th at 6:00 a.m. During this time, traffic will detour to Cordilleras Road.

We appreciate your continuing patience and support as this critical work takes place to improve your drinking water delivery system.  We will work to minimize inconvenience although road detours are necessary. This new drinking water pipeline is an essential component for maintaining the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which supplies nearly 100% of your community’s drinking water and delivers water to over 2.6 million residents in the counties of Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco.

For any questions or concerns about the construction, please call our 24-hour project hotline, 1-800-571-6610, and also continue to check this blog for updates.

This construction is part of the SFPUC Water System Improvement Program, a $4.6 billion bond-funded program to seismically upgrade and repair the regional water system’s aging pipelines, tunnels, and dams. This Bay Division Peninsula project includes a 9-mile, 5-foot diameter welded steel pipeline seismically designed to withstand an earthquake, and will allow the SFPUC to take existing, older pipelines out of service for maintenance and repair.

Third Level of the Tunnel Launch Shaft Being Excavated!

The Contractor will continue with construction activities in the Right of Way this Saturday, August 18th & 25th. Saturday work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Saturday work is necessary to complete the excavation of the tunnel shaft between the recently completed secant piles at Bennett Road.  The Contractor installs supports (called walers and struts) to reinforce the wall of the tunnel shaft. They are currently excavating the 3rd of 4 levels of the tunnel shaft.

At the Receiving Shaft near Edgewood Rd. by Woodhue Ct., secant pile work is moving forward with 13 out of the 24 piles installed.  Once the secant piles are completed, the Contractor will then begin preparations for the micro-tunnel by excavating the receiving tunnel shaft between secant piles.

Two Levels of the Tunnel Launch Shaft Are Complete!

Saturday work is continuing this weekend August 11th into August 18th to complete the excavation of the tunnel shaft between the recently completed secant piles at Bennett Road.  2 of the four levels of the tunnel shaft are now complete!  The Contractor installed one of the supports (called walers and struts) to reinforce the wall of the tunnel shaft.   Now there are only 2 more to go until they reach the bottom of the 54ft tunnel shaft.

On Receiving Shaft side near Edgewood Road and Woodhue Court the Contractor had to bring in another drill rig for the secant pile operation to construct the receiving tunnel shaft. Check out some photos below!

The Secant Wall Piles Complete! Now what?

With BDPL5 Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project’s successful installation of all 48 secant piles at Bennett Road, the tunnel shaft is now ready to be excavated. The sequenced construction of the overlapped and reinforced concrete piles formed the walls of the tunnel shaft.

Now the Contractor is focused on excavating the tunnel shaft between the completed secant piles. There are four levels of the tunnel shaft where crews will install the supports  (called walers and struts) that reinforce the walls of the tunnel shaft and are installed approximately every 10-ft down the shaft.

NOTE: Saturday work is scheduled for August 4th, August 11th and August 17th to complete this excavation work at Bennett Road.

Once the Contractor reaches the bottom of the 54-ft  tunnel shaft they will install a concrete pad at the bottom. This will make the tunnel shaft completely water tight.

The Contractor also began preparations for the Receiving Shaft side near Edgewood Road and Woodhue Court. A ramp was installed to provide  a more stable surface to bring in equipment. . A drill rig was mobilized for  the secant pile operation  to construct the receiving tunnel shaft.
