Drilling Secant Piles for Water Tight Tunnel Shaft Continues

Steve P. Rados, Inc., the tunnel project contractor, completed excavation of 16 of the 48 piles.  The sequenced construction of overlapped and reinforced concrete piles will form the walls of the tunnel shaft for the micro-tunnel boring machine. Each pile is filled with 17 cubic yards of concrete to create water tight walls for the shaft.    The large drill used to perform the necessary excavation weighs 200,000lbs and can reach heights of nearly 80ft. With its massive size and weight it allows the Contractor to drill through the solid bedrock.

Bay Road Paving Is Starting

Bay Road will be completely paved this week. Work will start tomorrow, Wednesday, June 13th. Work hours for paving have been extended to 8:30am to 4:00pm. Grinding and paving will take approximately one week and should be completed by Wednesday, June 20th.

This work will include grinding the current surface. During this time the pavement surface will be uneven. The entire road, curb to curb, from Marsh Road to Greenwood Drive will be newly paved. Each lane will be paved separately to maintain access to Bay Road.

Single lane access on Bay Road will be maintained during construction hours and flaggers will direct traffic as necessary. Expect delays during work hours. Always follow directions from flaggers and please use alternate routes when possible.

Please Note: All construction may be delayed to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Stay Safe!

Bay Road Approaching Completion

Restoration has been moving ahead steadily on Bay Road. For the past several weeks the concrete curb has been replaced. As the concrete work is completed, focus can shift to paving. Today crews were removing the temporary asphalt from the entire Cal Water trench and placing permanent pavement.

After the Cal Water trench is paved the entire width of Bay Road will be ground and repaved from Marsh Road to Greenwood Drive.

We appreciate your patience during construction and we look forward to completing restoration soon.

Check out photos of the work below.

Drilling Secant Piles for a Water Tight Tunnel Shaft

The drill rig has been working steadily for about one week excavating every other pile and then filling them with concrete. This alternating drilling allows the remaining ones to be drilled in an overlapping fashion later and filled with concrete creating the water tight shaft. Each pile drilled is 62ft deep and 3ft in diameter requiring over 17 cubic yards of concrete to fill. So far 6 of the 48 total secant piles have been completed. Once the tunnel shaft is complete the Contractor can begin the micro-tunnel operation to install new drinking water pipeline. Photos coming soon!

Restoration Progress (we're getting closer)

Additional resources have been brought on to complete the commercial parking lot and residential driveway restoration work. They are currently reviewing the necessary work in the field and starting to plan their work schedule. You may notice some pink markings on the ground as we begin to examine the exact scope of work in the field. Please give us a call or email if you have any questions about this work.

Bay Road curb and gutter repair work is making significant progress. This restoration  work needs to be completed before the final paving can take place

Final paving has been completed on several streets in North Fair Oaks including 9th Ave, 7th Ave and 2nd Ave. Final paving in North Fair Oaks will continue until the remaining roads are completed.

Fencing is nearly complete in Redwood City with only two fences remaining. This work has been temporarily paused as the crew is needed to complete work in Pulgas Valve Lot. Fence restoration will also continue in North Fair Oaks after test and inspection locations are backfilled and all sewer lateral work is completed.

Mowing has been completed on the Right of Way around 12th Ave and 2nd Ave in North Fair Oaks and is ongoing in East Palo Alto. The next areas to be mowed are around 8th Ave and Curtis Ave in North Fair Oaks and near South Place in Redwood City.

·         Staging in the Right of Way in the Pulgas Open Space  continues and along the entire alignmentElectrical work and monitoring equipment is being installed at the Redwood City valve house

Look How Far the Water System Improvement Program Has Come

The Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) is $4.6-billion of infrastructure upgrades, including more than 80 projects located in six Bay Area counties to ensure the highest quality drinking water and a reliable water supply to customers following an earthquake. These seismic improvements include dams, tunnels, pipelines, treatment plants and many more facilities that serve 2.6 million Bay Area customers. 2011 marked the start of the WSIP’s most active construction year to date. As of March 31, 2012, 55 out of 81 local and regional projects have been completed. All WSIP projects are forecasted to be complete in 2016.
